Just a little more to the right...a little more.

Ah, I am not alone...how obsessed is Lileks, really? Does he arrange his closet (and Gnats) by color and season?

Rearrange the books, whispers a voice in my head. Rearrange them by height.

I drive my fists into my temples. No! They have to be ordered by genre, author, and date!

But that looks so ugly. So rough. So . . . random and unplanned. Order them by height. Do it. Do it now.

Not being of hearty Lileks stuff, I caved...my books are not only arranged by height but color...tonal qualities carefully matched to the room decor. Really butt-ugly spines banished to the office where MishMash--the low lord of tech tomes-- reigns.

It looks so nissssssse.

Ever cut books in half,
literally, to make 'em fit
a narrow shelf?

Just wondering .... *G*

Uh...no...my bookshelves are adjustable. *G*

Adjustable for depth as well
as width?

Why yes, they are. *G*

We have a group of modular teak cabinet - book case combos...the bottom shelves are wide/deep...some have doors, some drawers...some open...they're floor to ceiling modules. It's a pain in the butt, but you can reconfig with a power driver and an allen wrench. We had them made years ago for a music room by a now defunct closet customizer.

Mine are sorted by "where they would fit," as I have many more books than shelves or shelf space. It rankles me to an early end to know that, also. It does actually cross my mind from time to time: quarterly, at least. I always find the one for which I am searching when I am searching for it -- prior to; the end of the search; or the finding of the book. No one else can do this, however. It, therefore, makes me indispensible to my existence.

I read "makes me indispensible to my existence"
while Pachelbel's Canon was blasting so loud
the computer table was throbbing. In this context,
what you have written really makes sense.
